    Dear Friends,

Thought I’d share and maybe save our friends some
time.  I was trying to find out where my son is on the
DD Waiver wait-list, and spent well over 2 hours
getting nowhere.  I finally got a call back (the next day)
from a very helpful woman at VA DMAS.  She told me
there actually is a general number for all waivers that
people can call (and it’s not on the website):
804-225-4222.  You will need your child’s DOB, SS#
    and full name.
    Best,

The Auburn School  offers a stimulating educational
program for intellectually engaged students with
challenges in the areas of communication,
    socialization, language, and organization.  Our
program is appropriate for students who can learn
successfully and appropriately in a small classroom
setting.  Auburn’s program will simultaneously support
the development of academic skills, social
competency and pragmatic language in an engaging
educational environment.  To achieve this mission, The
    Auburn School will:

    * Offer a safe, nurturing and highly personalized
learning environment for children through small class
sizes, individualized learning plans and a supportive
    school setting;
    * Provide a challenging academic curriculum featuring
    multi-sensory instruction, research-based curriculum
    and appropriate student accommodations;
    * Integrate social skills and language development
throughout the curriculum and school day using
    research-based programs and educational best-
    practices;

The Shire School is advertising for new students for
next school year. In particular, they are looking for at
least on 8 year old to fill out their class roster -- I am not
sure how many openings there are beyond that one.

You can find out more about the school at
www.theshireschool.com, including how to contact the
school. I have a son at the school and would be happy
to talk to anyone who is interested. Just send me an
    email.

I have excerpted from the web site the mission and
guiding principles. Some of you will be familiar with
RDI -- Relationship Development Intervention, which is
one of the philosophies that the Shire School
    promotes.

    Mission
The Shire School will provide a therapeutic,
    developmental, multi-sensory education to children
with learning, attention-deficit, social and language
disabilities. Students will be taught through individually
tailored approaches with an emphasis on physical
    movement and experiential learning.

    Guiding Principles
A Nurturing Environment: The Shire School will provide
a safe, loving, environment where students can learn
and develop at a healthy pace and where their
strengths and weaknesses will be understood and
    integrated into their educational goals.

    Academic Integration of Therapeutic Professionals:
    Speech, occupational and sensory motor
therapists/professionals will participate and be relied
upon for evaluation and development of student
curriculum, working with each teacher, aide, staff, and
    family.

Intimate Class Size: Each class will not exceed six
children, with a minimum of one teacher and aide.

Movement and Sensory Integration: Each school day
will incorporate extensive movement as a means to
develop neural pathways through stimulation and
experience gained from interaction with the
    environment.

Social and Relationship Development: The principles
of Floortime therapy and RDI (Relationship
Development Intervention) are integrated into the daily
curriculum and will be used for facilitating cognitive
and social skills as well as group interaction.

On-going consultation: Teachers and staff are partners
with parents in the process of educating their children
and are committed to a high level of communication
and collaboration between the school and families.

Thematic Education: Curriculum will be thematic,
based on the belief that children learn best when
material is presented within a relevant and holistic
    context.

Field Trips: Regularly scheduled trips will provide the
students with the opportunity to expand their unit study
and learn about the world they live in.

The Newton School is designed for kids who may not
be able to reach their full potential in a public school
environment, and need small class sizes (8 students
per class), therapeutic movement integrated into the
school day, and a strong emphasis on social
    development.

As an extension of this effort, we are also opening an
after-school and weekend program so that we may
reach as many kids as possible. This program is
available to any child ages 5-12 years old. We have a
large facility (12,000 sq ft) in Sterling, VA (near the
Dulles Town Center) with a foam pit, multiple
trampolines, swings, a ball pit, a 24 ft climbing wall and
more, where children can do therapeutic movement,
tutoring, AIT (Tomatis), Interactive Metronome (IM) or
infrared sauna. Your child could come every day, or
just once a week. Our teachers from the School are
also working in this program, as well as additional staff
    dedicated to this.
