Galioto, Jr., MD Dr. Galioto received his medical degree from New York Medical College, where he also completed his internship and residency in pediatrics. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. He served as an exchange fellow at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School-Hammersmith Hospital in London. Dr. Galioto has received research grants to evaluate the rebreathing method of measuring cardiac output, to study ventilatory dynamics in infants and children, and to evaluate cardiopulmonary performance during exercise. Dr. Galioto is the author or co-author of over 150 scientific papers or abstracts, and has presented many papers at national and international scientific meetings. At both the University of Virginia and Georgetown University, Dr. Galioto is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. He has served as the Director of Pediatric Cardiology at Georgetown University and is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine (President 1992-1994), the European Pediatric Work Physiology Group, and is a Corresponding Member of the Association of Pediatric Cardiologists. Dr. Galioto is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Cardiology Section of the Academy. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has served as a member of its Committee on Coding and Nomenclature. Specialty: Pediatric Cardiology Stephen R. Shapiro, MD Dr. Shapiro is the senior practicing pediatric cardiologist in the Washington, D.C. area. A graduate of New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Shapiro completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Boston City Hospital, where he also performed research on the metabolic basis of storage diseases. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Shapiro has served as the Director of Pediatric Cardiology training programs at both Children’s National Medical Center and at Georgetown University, where he also served as Vice Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology. He is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University and at the University of Virginia. Dr. Shapiro served as Pediatric Cardiology Section Chief at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children from 2000-2002. He has performed research in fetal physiology and is the author or co-author of over 31 scientific publications. Dr. Shapiro is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of its Cardiology Section. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. Specialty: Pediatric Cardiology William C. Kirby, MD Dr. Kirby received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He received his pediatric training at the David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, in California. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Oregon Health Science Center in Portland. At the time of his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1993, Dr. Kirby was serving as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and as the Director of the Pediatric Cardiology Section at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He is presently a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Georgetown University and the University of Virginia, and Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at USUHS. Dr. Kirby has published over 35 scientific papers or abstracts. He has performed original research on transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus, hemodynamic effects during balloon aortic valvuloplasty, and on the use of mechanical thrombolysis in infants. Dr. Kirby is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of its Cardiology and Uniformed Services sections. Dr. Kirby is a Fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. Specialty: Pediatric Cardiology & Fetal Echocardiography; Cardiac Catheterization. Jennifer H. Lindsey, MD Dr. Lindsey is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of Virginia. Dr. Lindsey spent one year in private practice as a general pediatrician in Florence, South Carolina, and then returned to the University of Virginia to perform research on the biology of the vascular development. She remained at the University of Virginia to complete her fellowship in pediatric cardiology. Dr. Lindsey has presented her research at national meetings. Her interests include the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in the fetus and child, with particular focus on echocardiography and fetal echocardiography. As a former All-American in women’s lacrosse and National College Athletes Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Lindsey is also interested in heart disease in the athlete and athletic participation for children with congenital heart disease. Dr. Lindsey is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of its Cardiology Section. In addition, Dr. Lindsey is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and currently serves on the Breakout Group on Quality of the Pediatrics Section of the American College of Cardiology. Specialty: Pediatric Cardiology & Fetal Echocardiography James A. Thompson, MD Dr. Thompson is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. In his final year of residency, Dr. Thompson served as Chief Resident. He completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco in June 2001. Dr. Thompson's interests include interventional cardiology and the critical care of infants and children with heart disease. He is involved in research investigating devices to close holes in the heart without surgery, currently acting as principle investigator for the Stroke/PFO trial and Migraine/PFO trial He has personally performed more than 450 device closures, and has presented his research at national and international meetings and has had his work published. He currently serves as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Inova Fairfax Hospital (2004-2006). Dr. Thompson is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology, and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
