    Beginning August 2, 2010 and
    continuing through August 7, 2010,
    UConn will host a transition program
    entitled, “University College Preparation,
    Rights and Responsibilities, Empowerment
    and Planning (UCPREP).” UCPREP is a
    six day transition focused summer program
    for rising high school juniors and seniors,
    which gives participants the opportunity to
    immerse themselves in the college setting.

    Participants will:

    * Acquire a broader knowledge of college
    life, expectations and responsibilities.
    * Gain a better understanding of their
    academic and personal strengths and
    needs.
    * Understand their rights and
    responsibilities as a student with a
    disability.
    * Learn the skills to become an effective
    self-advocate.
    * Create an individualized college transition
    plan that will assist with planning,
    preparation and adjustment.

    August 7-8, 2010
    International Sibling Conference: Exploring
    the Rewards and Challenges of Having
    Family Members with Disabilities

    Greenwich, CT

    Beginning Saturday, August 7, 2010 and
    continuing August 8th, the Sibling
    Leadership Network will present the
    “International Sibling Conference:
    Exploring the Rewards and Challenges of
    Having Family Members with Disabilities.”
    The conference will be held at The Hyatt
    Regency Hotel located at 1800 East
    Putnam Avenue in Old Greenwich,
    Connecticut.

    Keynote speakers include:

    * Don Meyer, Director of the Sibling
    Support Project
    * Chris Burke, best known for his role as
    Charles “Corky” Thatcher on the show
    “Life Goes On”
    * Dr. Tamar Heller, Professor and Director,
    Institute on Disability and Human
    Development, and of the Rehabiliation
    Research and Training Center on Aging
    with Developmental Disabilities at the
    University of Illinois at Chicago
    * Tia Nelis, Vice President of Self
    Advocates Becoming Empowered and SElf-
    Advocacy Specialist, UIC

    The conference will provide the siblings of
    people with disabilities, individuals with
    disabilities, parents, spouses/partners and
    professionals in the disability field
    opportunities to share stories and
    information, gain insight on sibling
    experiences, and to learn more abut
    current research and best practices in the
    disability field.

    The Disability Convention and Exposition:
    Independence Through Empowerment

    Hartford, CT

    On Saturday, August 28, 2010, The
    Connecticut Disability Advocacy
    Collaborative will sponsor the “2010
    Disability Convention and Exposition:
    Independence Through Empowerment.”
    The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.
    m. at the Connecticut Expo Center located
    at 265 Reverend Moody Overpass in
    Hartford, Connecticut.

    Participants will hear from candidates from
    stat and national offices in attendance, visit
    exhibitors carrying the latest in adaptive
    equipment and technology, get information
    from public and private agencies that
    provide services and supports to children
    and adults with disabilities and meet a wide
    variety of advocacy organizations.
